DIY Sight Word Hearts for Valentine’s Day
First, I prepped for the activity. I wrote out a few sight words on alphabetize cards.
We only work on 5-10 words at a time. You don’t want to overwhelm your child with too many words at once.
You’ll moreover want to try this fun sight word jump & grab game!
Then I cut out a handful of small hearts from construction paper. I wrote the reports of the words separately on the paper hearts.

To start our game I set out a sight word vellum on the table. I scattered some lettered paper hearts on the table as well.

Here are some tips for playing this sight word game with your child:
- Have your child read the word. If they have trouble, help them read it correctly the first time.
- Let your child repeat the word a few times.
- Have your child use the lettered hearts to spell out the word. Trace the reports as they spell.
- Then let your child read the sight word from the heart letters.

Both sight words and phonics are essential for learning to read. But with sight words, especially, it’s all well-nigh repetition!
