Science shows that volunteering is good for you. Not only does it make you feel good and help you to live longer, 96% of those who volunteer say it enriches their sense of purpose in life.
It is almost impossible to visit an Atria community and not find residents involved in some sort of civic engagement. We call our events program Engage Life® because that’s exactly what we’ve designed it to help our residents do every day, in the company of friends.
In 2013, a group of residents at Atria El Camino Gardens expressed a desire to help their local community. They were already very active within their Atria community – helping friends, family and one another – but they wanted to reach more people. Armed with the desire to help others and a long list of skills and giving hearts, the Good Samaritan Outreach program was born.

From creating dollhouses for underprivileged children to preparing meals for the homeless, the Good Samaritan Outreach program enhances the lives of others every day. The program received the ICAA Innovators Achievement Award – a category of the Innovators Awards program recognizing programs and concepts that advance aging – and was featured in the Journal on Active Aging.
